What are Search Engines Anyway?

Well, there are two flavours - directories which are like the Yellow Pages (Yahoo!) that list websites by category and search engines that give a list of websites that in their opinion match the search terms entered. Google garners 70% of the search market, the rest divided principally between Yahoo and Bing.

How Does Google Work?

Google attempts to provide the result the searcher is looking for even though search terms may be vague. That's its job and it never stops trying to provide the right result for the right query.

Google sends out 'spiders' - software that copies every word and every picture of all these pages and stores them in a searchable index. It will typically visit every website on its index every three days. Not only is every word indexed but also every search term that is entered into Google.

Why are Search Engines Important?

An every increasing percentage of people use search engines to navigate. For large companies that market themselves through other vehicles such as TV/radio ads, trade journals etc., websites are less important. For the other 99.9% of us, they will remain very important.
